Sigma exchange in the nuclear force and effective field theory

چکیده
In the phenomenological description of the nuclear interaction a crucial role is traditionally played by the exchange of a scalar I=0 meson, the sigma, of mass 500-600 MeV, which however is not seen clearly in the particle spectrum and which has a very ambiguous status in QCD. I show that a remarkably simple and reasonably controlled combination of ingredients can reproduce the features of this part of the nuclear force. The use of chiral perturbation theory calculations for two pion exchange supplemented by the Omnes function for pion rescattering suffices to reproduce the magnitude and shape of the exchange of a supposed σ particle, even though no such particle is present in this calculation. I also show how these ingredients can describe the contact interaction that enters more modern descriptions of the internucleon interaction.

The Nuclear Force Problem: Is the Never-Ending Story Coming to an End?
The attempts to find the right (underlying) theory for the nuclear force have a long and stimulating history. Already in 1953, Hans Bethe stated that ”more man-hours have been given to this problem than to any other scientific question in the history of mankind”. In search for the nature of the nuclear force, the idea of sub-nuclear particles was created which, eventually, generated the field o...
متن کاملInvestigation of strong force influence on behavior of nuclear energy levels in Calcium and Titanium isotopes: Based on quantum chaos theory
The atomic nucleus is a complex many-body system that consists of two types of fermion (neutron and proton). They are in the strong interaction. The statistical properties of energy levels and influence of strong force between these fermions are well described by random matrix theory. Resonance of energy levels depends on the Hamiltonian symmetry placed in one of the GOE, GUE and GSE ensembles ...
متن کاملDescribing Nuclear Matter with Effective Field Theories
Nuclear forces have been studied in depth over the past fifty years, leading to excellent phenomenological descriptions. A recent resurgence of interest in this field has been fueled by the promise of systematic results from an effective field theory (EFT) analysis [1]. EFT techniques adapted to many-body systems may give new insight into the properties of nuclei and their connection to QCD. Th...

The 1H and natural-abundance 13C-NMR spectra of 1-thiacyclooctan-3-one (1) have been measured from 25 to -100°C. Coalescence is observed in the 1H-NMR spectra of (1) at about -80°C, and attributed to ring inversion in a boat-chair conformation, which is the predominant conformation of (1). The free energy of activation (DG¹</s...

The two-nucleon interaction derived in chiral effective field theory is used to investigate the saturation properties of symmetric nuclear matter at next-to-leading order. Pauli blocking effects in the two-pion exchange diagrams are shown to produce an effective attraction in nuclear matter.
